Foods to Avoid:

Due to many patients experiencing stomach upset while taking this medication, it is important to avoid certain food groups to mitigate this including:

  • Stringy fruits and vegetables (examples: pineapple, celery, apples)
  • Gas forming vegetables (examples: broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussel sprouts, onions, and asparagus)
  • dairy (example: cheese, yogurts)
  • Foods with added sugar | aim to keep sugar intake below 30g per day
  • fried foods
  • Alcohol | alcohol lowers blood sugar and when combined with Semaglutide, it can lower your blood sugar to unsafe levels | avoid more than one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men

Foods to Consider:

When taking the medication, choosing nutrient-dense foods high in protein, fiber, and healthy carbs is important. Additionally, it is essential to stop eating when you feel full. By following a balanced, whole-food diet and incorporating the foods below, you are more likely to maximize your results.

  • Non-starchy foods that are low in carbs and rich in fiber (examples: asparagus, beans, carrots, eggplant, leeks, mushrooms, peppers, swiss chard, tomatoes, greens, etc.)
  • Whole grains that are rich in fiber and a type of carbohydrate that does not raise blood sugar significantly (examples: oatmeal, brown rice, whole wheat bread, barley, whole wheat pasta, etc.)
  • Nuts that are made of healthy unsaturated fats as well as protein and fiber that do not raise blood sugar and helps reduce risk of heart disease
  • Protein rich foods: ¼ of your plate should consist of protein at meals as they do not raise your blood sugar too much and can help make you feel fuller for longer (examples: animal products, quinoa, chickpeas, lentils, oats, etc.)
  • Legumes that are packed with fiber and beneficial nutrients (examples: beans, peas, and lentils)

  • Are there side effects?

The most commonly reported side effect is weight loss. However, some have reported nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, or constipation. The rarest risks of serious effects increase in patients with hypoglycemia, kidney problems, and risk of allergic reactions. This medication is ideal for those who are in good health with no kidney or liver issues who wish to lose weight.
